Nicolas Noreña
Hi, I am Nicolas Noreña, I am from Colombia, I've been living in New York since 2008 and I currently live in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. I am a theater maker, I have been directing, writing, designing, performing and producing original work with my theater company THE MILLION UNDERSCORES _ _ for the past seven years.
Eight years ago me and my friends started this website after graduating from the Experimental Theatre Wing and we worked here when we didn't have studio spaces, or any connections with venues to show our work. This became our school, we made short works and interrogated our process and our artistic drives, and became very curious in the space in between; in between artistic temperaments, in between curiosities, in between stages in a process, in between ideas. We held this space for two years and then we spread out into the world still maintaining our friendship and supporting each other.
I have worked in the downtown theater scene and have been part of its exodus into the Brooklyn theater scene. I've worked with Richard Foreman, Mary Overlie, The Talking Band, Jess Barbagallo, Object Collection, Katie Brook, and Eva Von Schweinitz among others. My relationship with Richard Foreman and Mary Overlie has been very influential in my development as a human, as an artist and as a theater director. I currently teach Six Viewpoints at the Experimental Theater Wing in New York University.
With my theater company I have created more than 13 original productions that have been presented at MoMA, Target Margin Theater, FringeNYC, Vital Joint, Mabou Mines, Dixon Place, Triskelion Arts, Cave home of LEIMAY and most recently at The Brick Theater.
I have been a LEIMAY fellow resident at CAVE for the past five years, where most of my company's work has been developed. I was an artist in residence with MABOU MINES 2015-2016, and was a Lab Artist with Target Margin in 2019.
Now it is an odd time, where bios don't seem to matter, but very basic exchanges do. I reached out to my friends and we have started a new episode of morning to morning, now ".net". A space for us to understand why art? what art? how art?
Lately I've been specially interested in the idea of "reality" and how it is constructed. My work here is revolving around questions about abstraction as a process and the origins and forms of abstract art. Outside of here I've been also curious about spirits and the body's meridians, I have predilection for thinking about exodus, ghosts, eloping characters, exotic voyages, homosexual archetypes, big mountains, missing airplanes, illusionists, and the sky of Saturn at Night.
